Patrick Howe Artist Statement
The Post Personalism Project, 2018
The premise of my work in this show is based in an exploration of the evolution of human consciousness. In contemplating this topic I concluded that consciousness is best characterized by space and light. Therefore concepts of space and light are the starting points for the design of this series.
Consciousness is like space in that it holds the content of our knowledge and experience. Without consciousness there would be nothing to know or experience. And consciousness is like light because the “light” of our awareness allows us to to perceive the world and experience.
The theme of consciousness fits within The Post Personalism Project because Post Personalism seeks to explore artistic metaphors and expressions that point beyond the status quo state of human consciousness today.

PRESS RELEASE
Seattle artist Patrick Howe has developed an artwork series about our common oneness. According to Howe, we need to overcome our exclusively personalized view of the world in order to achieve oneness. In the Post Personal Project, which includes oil paintings, watercolors, digital media and videos, Howe presents a multitude of approaches. Some are whimsical and others are more serious, but all communicate the message of “transcending the ego”.

Howe says his work is inspired by Northwest artists Morris Graves, Mark Tobey and other artists of the Northwest School who explored Eastern philosophy in the 1940s and 50s. Howe explains “Morris Graves explored his interest in oneness, transcendence and higher consciousness in his artwork in a stunning and masterful way. To me it brings a deeper dimension to the creative process. But, as much as I love his style, I have no interest in emulating it. My interest has more to do with understanding where his head was at. So I am playing in the same space as he did, only using the forms and techniques of our time.

Howe also has a history of painting and teaching in the traditions realism style. But now, to the surprise of his collectors, he has expanded into making contemporary works that focus on philosophical ideas and psychological concepts, but he assures them that historically many artists have worked in multiple themes at the same time.
In 1974 Howe graduated with a BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art, in Portland, OR. He operated Patrick Howe Gallery, in Seattle, for ten years until the property was reconstructed in 2014. His art theory book “The Awakening Artist: Madness and Spiritual Awakening in Art” was published by John hunt Publishing. The book was nominated in 2014 for the Robert Motherwell Book Award for outstanding and original thinking on the topic of Modernism in Art. He currently teaches painting classes and workshops. He has lived in Seattle since 1981.
